How many hashtags on Instagram?

Instagram says you can use up to 5 tags on a post. 5 fits. 6 is over. A comment is a different line: no more than 30 hashtags, and no more than 5 @ mentions. This page counts the tags you type. It does not post them, and the count does not predict reach.

Instagram's published hashtag rules

The post rule is from Instagram Help, Use hashtags on Instagram, as read on 3 November 2026. You can add hashtags in the caption or comments. A hashtag is # followed by text or emoji. You can use up to 5 tags on a post. If you include more than 5 tags on a single photo or video, your comment will not post. Numbers are allowed. Spaces and special characters, like $ or %, will not work. You can only tag your own posts. A private profile's tagged posts do not appear publicly on hashtag pages.

The comment limits are from Why there's an error when you try to add a comment on Instagram, read the same day. A comment cannot include more than 30 hashtags. It also cannot include more than 5 @ mentions, and the same comment cannot be posted multiple times. Instagram filters some words. This page does not know which words those are.

What you type	What Instagram prints
#hooks #shorts #captions	3 of 5 on a post. 3 of 30 in a comment.
5 tags	The post line. A comment still has room.
6 tags	Over the post line by 1. Still within 30 for a comment.
30 tags	Over the post line. At the comment hashtag line.
31 tags	Over both lines.
6 @ mentions	Over the comment mention line by 1.

YouTube's hashtag line is 60, in the YouTube hashtag counter. A caption's character length is a different check in the character counter.
